About the Filmmaker

McKenzie Barney

Adventurer, Filmmaker, Writer, Speaker

McKenzie Barney is a four-time Emmy Award-winning producer, having worked on documentary films and series for National Geographic, Outside Television and Fox Sports. She’s filmed interviews and produced programs featuring Bill Clinton, Ringo Starr, Mia Hamm, Mike Tyson and more. McKenzie is a contributor at The Radavist and has been published in the Bikepacking Journal, as well as written content for industry-leading outdoor brands such as Columbia, Goal Zero, Big Agnes, Bedrock Sandals, Garmin and more.

Before traveling the globe by bicycle, McKenzie explored some of the world’s most illustrious trails on foot. Her 6,000 miles of hiking experience includes the Pacific Crest Trail, New Zealand’s Te Araroa, Chile’s Greater Patagonian Trail, Nepal’s Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Trails, India’s Himalayan Spiti Valley, and the Colorado Trail.

Thru hiking naturally led to seeing the world by bicycle. McKenzie tells the story of her multi-year, mostly solo project to cycle the world through five continents, 28 countries and 18,000 miles in her self-directed, produced, written and edited film Cycling The World. In an effort to further the ripple effect of human-powered exploration, McKenzie decided to tour her film at live events in hopes of making the most lasting impact with her message.

“My mission for Cycling The World project is to share my truth and keep it as uninfluenced as possible, so that my message could be unaltered from me to you. That means no sponsorships, media platform, or investors, which is almost unheard of in today’s world of media.

Unconventional at it’s core, my Cycling The World adventure, film and speaking tour dares to think differently, and the funding was no exception.

Yes, you read that correctly: this multi-year adventure, the entire making of the film (shooting, writing, editing) and speaking tour are all self-funded and self-created. This project has been a labor of passion and heart.

Thank you for watching and supporting my project and furthering the ripple effect I hope to make for more human-powered exploration of our outer world and inner atlas.”
